The Chinese Cultural Revolution has had strong and lasting impact on the Chinese people. Mao Zedong (1893-1976) and the Chinese Communist Party organized students into fighting groups called the Red Guards. Their purpose was to overturn society by attacking symbols of authority such as teachers, books, religious beliefs, and traditional customs. They also wanted to promote complete loyalty to Mao and his ideas.
Advance Victoriously while Following Chairman Mao's Revolutionary Line in Literature and the Arts, ca. 1968
