Chinese Propaganda Poster

The Chinese Cultural Revolution has had strong and lasting impact on the Chinese people. Mao Zedong (1893-1976) and the Chinese Communist Party organized students into fighting groups called the Red Guards. Their purpose was to overturn society by attacking symbols of authority such as teachers, books, religious beliefs, and traditional customs. They also wanted to promote complete loyalty to Mao and his ideas.

The art of the cultural revolution was severely limited to propaganda. The only pictures allowed taught people that Mao and his ways were superior to all others. Notice in this poster that everyone seems happy, young, clean and healthy. What do you think of this poster?

Are all posters propaganda? (Propaganda is a form of communication aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position.
